Imagine being a child living in an orphanage, abandoned by your parents, receiving inadequate nutrition. Few or no medicines to relive your suffering when you are sick. No one who is dedicated just to you to tell you how special you are, to help you to learn to walk and talk and encourage you as you study and grow. Even if the caretakers at your orphanage are caring and loving, there are just too many children and too little money to change the situation.

St Theresa’s Therapy Centre is situated in the town of Vinogradiv, Ukraine. The centre provides therapy and education for children with disabilities from the Transcarpathian Region. It is run by Edit and her dedicated staff, who without their care, these children would be forgotten and receive no treatment or education.

The Carpathian Mission in Budapest and Franciscan Monks in Austria fund St Theresa’s. Without this funding they would not be able to operate. The government pay the wages of 4 teachers, but the wages of 9 ancillary staff such as therapists, cooks and cleaners and any medical treatment for the children are paid for out of the funding from the missions and donations from kind hearted people. The centre survives using very basic equipment and even runs short of items such as massage oil, they have to revert to using baby oil instead. The only piece of equipment they have is an old muscle-relaxing machine that the children take turns in using on their limbs. Staff have been advised by a specialist doctor that the children would benefit from magnetic therapy but with the equipment costing £750 to buy new, they will have to wait until funding can be found.

Take Hope has helped St Theresa’s in the past by donating refurbished wheel chairs, toys and massage oil  for the children. They are in desperate need of more wheel chairs, callipers, walking frames, walking sticks and toys and clothing for the children as well as suitable equipment to treat the children’s ailments such as the magnetic therapy machine. Take Hope is committed to helping St Theresa’s, we will do our best to acquire this equipment for the next shipment of aid.

The Trustees of Take Hope are pleased to announce that in June 2009, we were able to donate $1500 to St Theresa's to enable them to purchase the much needed magnetic therapy machine.
